Wade passed, the Janes helped countless women get safe abortions in and around the Chicago area. Like their generic name, “Jane” the pixelated look is meant to camouflage them from identification. The paintings are based on mug shots of several of the Janes who were arrested for their work, but I put a halo around them in gratitude for their courage.

Veiled under a stamped, quilt-like Havana tile pattern, a pixelated Sojourner Truth sold her “shadow” (small photos called cartes de visites) to support her “substance” (her abolitionist and feminist endeavors). Portraits of Black people were formerly used to document them as property. As a former enslaved person, the act of selling her visage showed great valor and agency.
